Why take this test?
The thyroid gland (located at the front of the neck) is responsible for thyroid hormone regulation. If there is a problem, you may produce too much of the thyroid hormone (Overactive – Hyperthyroidism) or too little (Underactive – Hypothyroidism).
Early signs for an underactive thyroid include unexplained weight gain, dry skin, feeling cold, puffy skin, hair loss or tiredness.
Early signs for an overactive thyroid include fast heart rate, anxiety, unexplained weight loss, feeling hot, hand tremors, bulging, dry, puffy or irritated eyes and difficulty sleeping (insomnia).

Why take a thyroid function test?
The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped organ located at the base of your neck. It releases hormones that control metabolism and the way your body uses energy. It’s important to test your thyroid as it regulates vital body functions, including, breathing, heart rate, central and peripheral nervous systems, body weight, muscle strength, menstrual cycles, body temperature, cholesterol levels

Dr Katie Stephens
“Your thyroid is a gland in your neck that controls your body’s metabolism. Its effects are felt all over the body. An overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) can make you feel as though everything is sped up too fast: it may make your pulse race or even give you palpitations, it may cause a tremor, sweating, loose stools, hair loss, weight loss, menstrual changes and even eye symptoms.
An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) has the opposite effect of making everything sluggish: symptoms include constipation, weight gain, dry skin, lethargy, menstrual changes, feeling cold, and even raising your cholesterol levels.”

Your personal dashboard
The results of your test are presented to you on an online dashboard designed by NHS clinicians. The dashboard includes different charts and views to help you easily understand your results.
